Plan Submittal Process
The applicate shall submit seven (7) complete sets of development plans (2 set will be submitted by the City staff to Limestone Valley Soil and Water Conservation District; SWCD), 2 Hydro Studies.  A Completed application and payment of the review fees will be required.

If applicable it will be the applicant's responsibility to submit the required sets of plans to the Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority and Environmental Health. The City will require these approvals before scheduling a meeting for the final approval of the plans and issuance of a permit.

The Community Development Department is available to assist you with your questions regarding any of the topics below. Our regular business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Building Department is striving for achieving a fast, efficient, and predictable process without compromising quality. The permitting staff is here to guide you through the permit process and will help you understand the rules and regulations that apply to your proposal. Obtaining the required permit for the intended work is just one step in the review and inspection process. Once the approved permit is issued and work begins, it’s time to schedule the necessary inspections, at regular intervals until the work is complete. It is also the responsibility of the Building Department to monitor the erosion control on properties after the building permit has been issued. This assures the quality of water in our valuable natural resources including our streams and rivers will be maintained.

The Economic Development Department is most often the first point of contact for those interested in bringing an industry or business to the city. This department provides the opportunity for the private sector to learn more about the city while maintaining confidential communication concerning the possibility of a real estate or business transaction.

The Engineering Department is responsible for the review of the planning, design and construction of capital improvements for the City of Canton including street improvements, right of way acquisition, storm water and utility system improvements. The Engineering Department is also responsible for the enforcement of state law and city ordinance for Erosion, & Sediment control to preserve the natural resources in the city of Canton. Through inspections, training and education the Erosion & Sediment Control Department will assist residents, developers, and builders in the Best Practices in Land Disturbance Activities.

The Planning and Zoning Department of the City of Canton is responsible for preparing and maintaining the City's Comprehensive Plan, which serves as a "blueprint" and policy guide for the overall growth and development of the community. In an effort to preserve the goals and objectives of the Comprehensive Plan, the Department of Planning and Zoning works daily with the Citizens of Canton, the Planning and Zoning
