The City of Canton Finance Department's duties include processing all accounts payable, processing payroll, maintaining the city's general ledger and preparing financial statements. Managing the city's investments and cash accounts is a primary function of the department, and there are eight main funds managed for the city, including the special purpose local option sales tax fund, hotel/motel tax fund, sanitation fund, impact fee fund, road and sidewalk fund, municipal court fund, the general fund and the water and sewerage fund.
Federal and state grants received by the city, such as those for transportation, public safety and capital expenditures, are administered and monitored by the Finance Department. This department maintains all personnel records and human resources, including Drug-Free Workplace documents and certification of employees for all departments. The Finance Department is also responsible for generating property tax bills and collecting annual business occupation tax for local businesses as well as issuing and administering alcohol licenses.
