Commercial Building Permit Issuance

In order to obtain a commercial building permit within the City Limits of Canton, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Prior to issuance of a building permit, the Fire Department must have an approved site plan. This site plan must have gone through the engineering approval process, which includes compliance with zoning, building department and water and sewer authority.
  2. Submit plans for plan review. There is no charge for the plan review process. Plans will be reviewed in the order in which they are received by the fire department. In order to be fair to all who submit applications, please do not ask us to make exceptions. A Plan Review Submittal form must be completed at the time plans are left for review. Please allow 10 days to 14 days for completion of the plan review process.
  3. Submit two (2) sets of signed, Engineer or Architect stamped plans; one for the Fire Department, and one to be returned to you for your job site copy. The job site copy must be kept on site at all times.
  4. All plans shall be dropped off at the City of Canton Building Department.

Information required for Plan Review process:

  1. Address of project.
  2. Name of project.
  3. Use and size of structure.
  4. Type of construction
  5. Contact person and telephone number.

Any changes made in the plans throughout the project must be submitted in writing. The changes will go through the plan review process. Departures from the original, approved plans shall not be made until the appropriate plan review has been completed.

If the building is required to be sprinkled, shop drawings of sprinkler system shall be submitted to the fire department for approval prior to installation of said system. All sprinkler pipes must be inspected before installation of said piping.

Water flow calculations will be performed to insure adequate water supply for fire suppression. It is the builder's responsibility to provide any additional water supply required.

All buildings 3,500 square feet and more and all multi-family structures (3 or more units) if not required by NFPA, are required by the City of Canton Sprinkler Ordinance to be sprinkled, using the City of Canton Standard for Installation of Sprinkler Systems.

Please refer to the International Building Code, NFPA 101, NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, the Georgia Accessibility Code, and any other adopted and applicable codes for specifications on drawings. These plans are required to be prepared by a design professional (architect or engineer) and shall be affixed with their official seal. Plans for all buildings shall indicate required structural and fire resistance integrity.
