The City of Canton offers a homestead exemption for seniors age 62 or older who own and reside in the home where taxes are assessed. To qualify for the senior exemption the owner must have reached age 62 by December 31st in the year preceding the tax levy and must apply for the exemption on or before March 1st in the year of the tax levy. The application for the senior homestead exemption is available in the tax department at city hall. The exemption is $112,000 toward the assessed value of the home. Seniors who own homes that are assessed at a value greater than $112,000 ($280,000 Fair Market Value) will be responsible for property taxes on that portion in excess of $112,000.
The City of Canton also offers special rates for seniors for weekly garbage collection. The application form for senior garbage is available in the water department at city hall. The applicant must be age 62 or older to qualify for the special rate. The monthly service charge for senior garbage is $7. This special rate provides a monthly savings of $9 for each qualified senior.

The Canton –Cherokee Triad and S.AL.T Council was implemented in July of 2006 by The City of Canton Police Department to represent all communities in our county. This Council and organization is responsible for listening and assisting all seniors with needs or concerns. The council consist of law enforcement officials, seniors and agencies who assist seniors. We are dedicated to this cause and will work hard to build a stronger community. - YMCA

For City of Canton Residents age 60 and older may use the indoor pool facilities and the indoor walking tree for no charge on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-3pm. Please stop by the registration desk on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 1-3pm to receive a golden hours card to use the pool and walking track during the designated times.Senior Program Information
